Caregiver Support

We understand you may have questions about receiving care for you and your loved ones. Here are several resources that provide helpful information and connections.

House of Friends Respite Care

The House of Friends (HOF) is an adult care and community outreach ministry of Bethany United Methodist Church. This program is offered free of charge to individuals with dementia who are being cared for at home by family members. It is a weekly program designed to give the family caregiver a four-hour respite. Participants interact socially with others in a highly structured but caring mode. The goal is to support the family so that institutionalization can be postponed.

We are one of many open support groups in the greater Austin area for those who have loved ones with various forms of dementia, including Alzheimers Disease.  We are sponsored by Bethany United Church in affiliation with the Alzheimers Texas. Our purpose is to provide an opportunity for care givers to meet on a monthly basis to share concerns and discuss issues they are confronted with.  At least every other month specialists are invited to attend the meeting and address various topics of concern, thus providing possible solutions to the many challenges faced by care givers. We are open to anyone who is providing support, either on a daily basis or at a distance. Religious affiliation not required. All that is required is a need for support.

We are led by Rev. David A. Lutz, the Care Ministries Pastor at Bethany, and Pat Fiero, a former caregiver of a family member with Alzheimers.

Savvy Caregiver (Caregiver-U)

This Course is Offered Periodically. Check the Upcoming Caregiver-U Classes at the bottom of the page.

Savvy Caregiver is designed to help those who have loved ones with dementia, particularly Alzheimer’s disease. Few family caregivers have received training for the work they do as caregivers. This program has been developed by professionals to help caregivers manage day-to-day life with their loved one who has dementia. It is designed to help the caregiver develop the following skills:

  • How to take into account the person’s disease-produced losses in the manner in which they interact with their loved one.
  • How to take their loved one’s disease stage into account in caregiving.
  • How to help their loved one become and remain involved in daily tasks and activities that allow him/her to be contented throughout the day.

Class is facilitated by:
Dave Lutz, Bethany Care Minister Pastor & Cheryl Goad, Stephen Minister

Both have been trained by Caregiver University and have extensive experience working with those having dementia.  Because of the interactive nature of this course, participation is limited to 15 individuals.

Powerful Tools for Caregivers (Caregiver-U)

Are you a caregiver for a parent, spouse, or other older adult for any reason? If so, this six-week, 90 minute class is for you. It is not a support group specific to your care receiver and how you effectively care for him/her; rather, its focus is on you and your health, and helping you to develop self-care tools.
