Drive a Senior - Northwest is a non-profit organization serving senior adults in the Northwest Austin, Cedar Park and Leander neighborhoods since 1986. Volunteers provide services, primarily transportation, to seniors to help them remain living independently in their own homes.
Types of Volunteers Needed:
Volunteer driver: Volunteers (20 and over) drive senior adults to medical appointments, grocery stores, and on essential errands. All clients are mobile (no wheelchairs are transported). Clients arrange all their ride requests through the Drive a Senior NW office and volunteer choose drives from an online system base on their preferences for location, distance, day/time, frequency, etc. Volunteer drivers are welcome to bring children along. Drive requests from clients are mostly weekdays, but some evening and weekend opportunities are available. Volunteering once a month is encouraged (more often if volunteer desires), just a couple of hours required for most round trip drives (shorter, one way drives are available as well).
Office Volunteer: Volunteers answer phones and take client requests, input them into computer system, call volunteers to check on availability and other general office duties. Recurring opportunities (morning or afternoon shifts of 2-3 hours) or substitute spots available in the office. A friendly phone voice, patience and attention to detail are required, as well as a soft spot for seniors.
How to volunteer:
A volunteer application can be obtained from the Drive a Senior NW office by email or mail, downloaded from the Drive a Senior NW website, or picked up in person. Our office is located in donated space at Anderson Mill Baptist Church (10633 Lake Creek Parkway); office hours are 9:00 am to 4:00 pm Monday – Friday. Volunteer orientations are held each Thursday at the Drive a Senior NW office at 1:30 (or arranged to fit volunteers’ schedule)
Current Projects/Dates:
Currently we are serving over 500 clients, providing over 750 rides per month, so there are drives available to fit almost anyone’s schedule.
