The transformation from a life of poverty to a life of self-sufficiency is fueled by child sponsorship, which is $39/month. The transformation occurs in three primary ways.
First, some of the immediate needs of the sponsored child are met, such as immunizations, or the provision of a school uniform or fees, which allow the child to participate more fully in the transformation surrounding him or her.
Second, experience has shown that the most effective way to bring lasting change to the life of a child is by strengthening the community which supports him or her. Most of the monthly sponsorship donations are pooled to address the most pressing community needs, such as access to education, healthcare, or clean water. So sponsorship may build a new school, for example, which allows all the children in the vicinity to get an education, including those who are not sponsored. Sponsorship provides blessings many times over, helping the entire community find its own pathway to a life of self-sufficiency.
Lastly, sponsorship provides an opportunity for a personal relationship. Although this is not a required part of sponsorship, it provides a powerful, tangible source of hope for the sponsored child and all those who nurture him or her. This relationship also provides the sponsor a unique witness to the joys and challenges of family life in Matete. Most relationships are built through the exchange of letters, photos, and gifts, but a sponsor may also visit the sponsored child.
