UMC General Conference

Tentative New Dates Proposed for the UMC General Conference

In a press release issued by UMNews on April 21, we have learned that the Council of Bishops is proposing that the UMC General Conference be moved to Aug 31 - Sept 10, 2021. For more information, you may read the press release HERE.

The May, 2020 UMC General Conference was postponed due to the pandemic. It would have been continuing discussions about how the global UMC can move forward in light of our longstanding disagreement about inclusiveness and interpretation of Scripture on the subject of same-gender weddings and LGBTQ ordination. Below, we provide ongoing information and valuable resources to help us prepare.

It is important to remember that ALL people have sacred worth, and Bethany UMC is committed to loving all people, regardless of race, gender, or sexual orientation, and we commit ourselves to be in ministry for and with all persons.

How to Have Respectful, Meaningful Conversations When You Disagree

We invite you to have a conversation with those where you agree and those with whom you have differences of opinion, with a listening ear, an understanding and compassionate heart, and speaking the truth in love. This is a time for each person to grow their faith by digging deeper into God’s Word and asking guidance from the Holy Spirit. As always, our pastors are here for you.

Our sermon series on The HEART Principles also provides some useful tools and information to help you in these conversations. Join us in worship for the series Jan 18 & 19 through Feb 15 & 16, or listen to them online.

Understanding the Theological Debate on Homosexual Marriage and Ordination

At the heart of this debate are the differing views surrounding the theology of marriage. In the Spring, Bethany UMC will host discussion forums about these differing viewpoints, but in the meantime, you may choose to individually learn more.

Bethany UMC Crucial Conversations on Biblical Interpretations and Marriage Event.

In November, 2019 Bethany held a series of discussions where we watched a video representing two differing viewpoints on the biblical interpretations surrounding the marriage of LGBTQ individuals. Attendees discussed things they appreciated and found challenging, and how the respect shown by each speaker can be a model for our church in how we approach this topic going forward.

You can view the video in its entirety (includes additional introduction to topic and speaker rebuttals which were not included in Bethany’s event, due to time constraints) by clicking the link below.
