Donations to Clean Water Projects
Water is the basis for life. Access to clean water is one of the most fundamental needs for community transformation. Nearly 60% of the community of Matete still lack access to clean water. If you’d like to help fund clean water projects in Matete, you may write a check to Bethany UMC, and put “Matete Projects” on the memo line.
The primary clean water projects are protecting natural springs, drilling wells, and building distribution systems.
The protection of natural springs prevents animals and animal waste from polluting the water, among other benefits. In these photos, a concrete tank was built into the side of a hill, capturing and protecting the water which flowed out naturally. Although on private property, the landowner donated the land and provides access to the community.
Projects with the largest benefits are new wells drilled into the ground with clean water pumped out and into a distribution system. Although techniques vary, this picture shows water storage tanks above a well with a solar powered pump. The storage tanks provide water to the community after the sun goes down. From tanks such as these, the community helps install water lines underground to various distribution stations, such as the small blue and white building in the photo. The proximity of these distribution stations can significantly reduce the distance that women and children must walk, allowing more time for education and other important activities.
When access to clean water is coupled with improved sanitation and hygiene, child mortality rates are cut in half. So World Vision is working with the community to build more sanitary latrines and providing hand-washing stations and hygiene education for the school children. The combination of access to clean water and improved sanitation and hygiene, is often referred to with the acronym of WASH.
The infrastructure to provide clean water is expensive and cannot be funded through sponsorship alone.
